Who else has a Pokemon obsessed kiddo!?!? Bueller? Someone please tell me that they can commiserate?! What started as an innocent distraction method by my husband has turned into one of our longest running obsessions yet. When I was pregnant with my third baby, my husband introduced my oldest son to the Pokemon Go game on his phone. It was a way of distracting him while I nested (read that as: tried to nap) and was a way of making him get outside and walk (he’d rather be inside the house with the AC blasting just like his mama). At first I didn’t like it because it was the first iPhone game he played, but then there was a little math involved and it gave me some free time, so I got over it.
But over the last TWO PLUS YEARS (how is that possible!?), he’s become more and more obsessed. We have a gagillion pokemon cards, about a billion mini figures (well, 144 to be exact), 4 handbooks, 2 lunch boxes, backpack patches, and the list goes on. He dressed as the main character (Ash) for Halloween last year and we used 100 of our mini figures on his “100th day of school” hat last year (in the hopes that I could then toss it when we were done…nope). There is no fighting it at this point. 😉
I have succumb to the fact that it just has to run its course. I cling to the positives that he’s doing some math with multiplying the various powers on the cards and that he’s at least reading when he’s flipping through the books. So with that in mind, I pre-0rdered the newest release of the Pokemon Handbook that came out on July 31st and became the Greatest Mom Ever for half a second. It arrived when we were on vacation, so he has been pouring over it in the last two days. If your kiddo is equally obsessed, go ahead and buy the book. You’ll hear too much about the Legendary Pokemon from the Alola Region and all of their mythical powers, but you’ll also hear a bit of silence when they run off to soak it all up…so it’s worth it 😉
